Importance of Brushing Experiment

What happens to our teeth when exposed to dark sugary drinks, like soda and juice? No lesson plans required for this one, Mom and Dad — this experiment does the teaching right before your very eyes! Let your kids see firsthand what happens when bacteria leftover from sugary drinks feeds on their teeth. They’ll be racing to brush those teeth at night!

Supplies

  • Toothbrush
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Cup
  • Dark soda and/or juice

Instructions

1. Fill a cup halfway with dark soda or juice.

2. Place the hard-boiled egg into the soda or juice and let it sit overnight.

3. Observe your egg the next morning. Note how the soda or juice ate away at egg’s hard outer shell, making it weak and stained.

4. Load up the toothbrush with toothpaste, and let your child brush the stains away.
