    The Challenge

    Post a photo or video of your family completing a science experiment inspired by ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda. Here’s how:

    1. Choose one science experiment from the videos below.
    2. Grab some baking soda and other needed household supplies.
    3. Gather the family and perform the experiment snapping a photo or video along the way.
    4. Share your photo or video on your public-accessible Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter account using hashtags #makeitcountchallenge AND #sweepstakes. You can also tag your friends to connect and share the fun!
    5. We’ll contact the winner via a comment below the entry post on the platform used to enter – keep your eyes peeled for the message & fingers crossed!

    Abracadabra — it’s magic! Watch as a balloon inflates before your very eyes. Here’s what happens: Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When the two materials mix, a chemical reaction occurs and produces carbon dioxide gas. It is the gas that causes the balloon to inflate.

    On your mark, get set, go — the race is on! Watch the baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction send two ping pong balls on a fast race to the finish.

    Magic Extinguisher

    • Safety glasses
    • Gallon pitcher
    • Cookie sheet
    • Lighter or matches
    • 6-12 votive candles
    • Vinegar
    Light’s out with the invisible fire extinguisher! Here’s how it works: A fire needs three oxygen, fuel, and heat to exist. When you poured out the carbon dioxide gas from the pitcher, you removed the oxygen from around the fire and put out the flame. Magic!

    • Food coloring (optional)
    • Spray bottle for vinegar (optional)
    A fun variation on the baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction, your kids, from toddlers to teens, will love watching their dino eggs “hatch!”

    Hanging Crystals

    Supplies

    • ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda
    • Food coloring
    • 2 - glasses or jars
    • Plate
    • Spoon
    • 2 - steel nails
    • Hot tap water
    • Piece of yarn or cotton string about 6” long
    Watch cave stalactites and stalagmites grow right inside your home! This experiment is a great demonstration of what dripping water does in real caves. It takes a few days or even a week for the formations to grow, but it’s totally worth the wait.
